Child Benefit and Growth Package as a School-leaver

Is your son or daughter no longer in education? Then they are classed as school-leavers for Child Benefit and the Growth Package. When they stop studying, graduate or start a first job, they may still be entitled to Child Benefit and the Growth Package.

The conditions for entitlement to Child Benefit as a school-leaver are different for each region in Belgium. We have listed these for your convenience.


School-leavers in Flanders

Are you no longer in education? Then you are entitled to the Growth Package for a further 12 months. When this period starts depends on the personal situation, but in most cases it is the first day of the month after your studies or the first day of the month after the holiday period.

You can work during this period as long as you work less than 80 hours per month or less than 475 hours as a student.

School-leavers in Brussels

As a school-leaver in Brussels, it is important that you register with Actiris as a job-seeking school-leaver. That way you will still be eligible to receive 360 days of Child Benefit.

One of the conditions for still receiving Child benefit during this period is that you work a maximum of 240 hours per quarter (e.g. quarter 1 = January, February, March).

School-leavers in Wallonia

Are you no longer in education in Wallonia? Then it is important that you register with FOREM as a job-seeker. That way, as a school-leaver, you may still be entitled to Child Benefit for 360 days.

If you start working during this period, the entitlement to Child Benefit lapses, unless your gross monthly income is less than 562.93 euros.

Please note: The Walloon rules for Child Benefit as a school-leaver are different for children born before 1 January 2001 and children born after 1 January 2001.

What should I do if my child is a school-leaver?

We’ll be happy to inform you about your specific situation. It is advisable to inform your KidsLife advisor when your child leaves school.
You can contact your KidsLife advisor or report the change online via your online file on My KidsLife.

In addition to Child Benefit, there are a number of other organisations that you may need to notify about your school-leaver.
