I’m pregnant; how do I request the Starting Amount?
Congratulations on your pregnancy! You’re entitled to a one-off premium for your future child. This is called the Starting Amount, and is also known as the Maternity Allowance or Birth Premium.
Applying for a Starting Amount from KidsLife is quick and easy. And the payment will be deposited into your bank account prior to the birth of your child.
- To process your Starting Amount application, we require the the mother-to-be’s personal details and the expected delivery date.
- In order to pay the Starting Amount prior to your baby’s birth, we also ask you to supply a doctor’s certificate stating that you’re at least 5 months pregnant.
When will the Starting Amount/Maternity Allowance be paid?
This depends on when you submit your application!
After the birth
Does your application concern the birth of your first child? Then you will receive your Maternity Allowance or Starting Amount via one of our weekly payments as soon after submitting your request as possible.
Does the application concern the birth of your second or subsequent child? You will receive your Maternity Allowance or Starting Amount once we have received the birth notification from the municipality.
Between 7 and 9 months of pregnancy
We will pay the Maternity Allowance or Starting Amount via one of our weekly payments as soon after submitting your request as possible.
From onset to the 7th month of pregnancy
You will receive the Maternity Allowance or Starting Amount 2 months prior to your expected delivery date. We make the payments once per week.
What is the difference between the Maternity Allowance, Birth Premium and Starting Amount?
The Starting Amount is the new name for the Maternity Allowance or Birth Premium in Flanders. Brussels and Wallonia still refer to this as the Maternity Allowance.

When will you start receiving your child benefit following the birth of your child?
If you have already applied for your Maternity Allowance or Starting Amount, then you will automatically receive your Child Benefit or Growth Package following the birth of your child.
So you need no longer submit an application when your baby is born! Registering the birth of your child with the municipality where you live is sufficient.
The exact timing of your Child Benefit or Growth Package payments depends on where you live. It’s important to note that your Child Benefit and Growth Package will be paid in the following month, just like your salary or benefits:
For example: you will receive your Child Benefit or Growth Package payments for the month of May around 8 June.
Growth package in Flanders
You will receive your Growth Package from the month of birth onwards.
For example: if your child was born on 2 March, you will receive your Growth Package from the month of March. The payment for the month of March occurs on 8 April.
Child benefit in Brussels and Wallonia
You will receive your Child Benefit in the month following the birth:
For example: if your child was born on 2 March, you will receive your Child Benefit from the month of April. The payment for the month of April occurs on 8 May.

There’s no difference between an online and a paper-based application. In both cases, your KidsLife adviser will set to work on processing your application as swiftly as possible.
Paper-based applications that are sent by post will of course have slower processing times than online applications due to the additional postal time involved.
